Apostille is a document approval system which enables an official document from one country to be valid in another country. The principles and rules concerning Apostille is specified in 1961 La Hague Convention. This system expedites validation of official document in a different country by revoking the need for approval by consulates.
In Turkey, depending on the type of document, apostille certification approval is done by governorships, district governorships, heavy penal courts or chief public prosecutor’s office.
What are the Documents Required for Apostille Certification?
- Document to be presented for apostille certification

- (For non-Turkish citizens) Passport or permit of residence
- If involves corporate documents; a list containing information on related persons, printed on company letterhead

Administrative documents, educational documents and diplomas, documents related to civil status, letter of attorney, court rulings, contracts, patents, medical reports, commercial documents are examples for documents that can receive apostille certification.
In short, any documents issued by public organizations can receive apostille certification. If the document that shall be presented for apostille certification is not issued by public bodies, these documents might be certified by notary before submission for apostille certification. The apostille certification shall be valid until the expiry date of the original document. For instance, if a diploma shall be valid for 2 years, apostille certification shall be valid for the same period as well.
